Suffern, NY (PRWEB) September 22, 2006 -- Good Samaritan Hospital is pleased to present a series of informational seminars highlighting new information, advances and treatments in the management of asthma. These informational seminars, titled “What’s New With Asthma” will meet on the first Tuesday of every month, beginning on October 3, 2006, in the Good Samaritan Hospital Conference Room # 2, Carolyn Schwartz building. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.

According to the non-profit Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, over 20 million Americans suffer from asthma. Asthma is characterized by inflammation of the air passages resulting in the temporary narrowing of the airways that transport air from the nose and mouth to the lungs. Asthma symptoms can be caused by allergens or irritants that are inhaled into the lungs, resulting in inflamed, clogged and constricted airways. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing tightness in the chest. There is no cure for asthma, but asthma can be managed with proper prevention and treatment.

“Good Samaritan Hospital is proud to provide this important seminar series for anyone interested in learning how to control and manage asthma,” said Barbara Demundo, RN, Director of Outreach at Good Samaritan Hospital. “By gaining knowledge of the latest asthma education, medical information and tools, people can learn to manage their symptoms effectively, and to better care for asthmatic children. If you or a loved one suffers from asthma, I urge you to attend this important seminar series.”

“What’s New With Asthma” meets in the Good Samaritan Hospital conference room on the first Tuesday of every month, beginning on October 3, 2006. There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be served. Please call Wendy Shindler, RN, BSN at 845-368-5405 for more information.

“What’s New With Asthma” is made possible in part by funds provided through Steps to a Healthier NY, part of the national Steps to a Healthier US health promotion and disease prevention initiative, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services. This five year cooperative agreement program aims to help Americans live healthier, longer, and better lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, overweight, obesity and asthma and addressing three related risk factors-physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco use.
